The benefit of this article is that it highlights why boards periodically need to sit back and reflect on why they exist, what do they do, are they doing what they should be doing and how can they do it better.
Too few boards take the time to conduct an assessment of their performance and an assessment of the competencies sitting around the table to determine if they are ‘fit for purpose’. I’m currently reviewing the performance of four boards using a very simple template which, for a few minutes of each board member’s time, quickly reveals how effective, or otherwise, the board is.
