Having just spent an hour developing a risk chart for a client, I was fascinated to read this article and see if there was anything I had overlooked. Having worked with several hundred non-profit organisations I’m aware that many boards don’t even consider risk and if they do it’s primarily from a financial perspective. Very few boards consider the strategic and generative dimensions to risk.
I liked the discussion around risk leadership rather than just risk management. As an example, the author points out that non-profit boards are often drawn to continue with a program or service long after it delivers value to their clients/stakeholders simply because such consideration is not on their risk radar.
One other aspect explored in some detail is the extent to which personal dynamics influence what is regarded as risk.
It’s an interview and a bit of a long read but there is some really good stuff tucked in the article. The only are it doesn’t touch on are specific areas of risk – I have a list of over 20 areas of risk that are more about risk leadership than risk management.
